Bouncing Back

n this month’s article, Mark Hulbert from the New York Times looks at the number of years it took for the U.S market to recover from the Great Depression of the 1930’s.

However rather than looking at this from the perspective of just the index value, he has looked at the ‘real’ value by including the effects of deflation, dividends and the effects of the underlying components of the Dow Jones. The result is that while initially the time period does appear to be quite long, the inclusion of these other factors significantly reduces the overall ‘recovery’ timeframe.
